After-Hours Grease Trap Cleanup – Kogarah
When a grease trap overflow occurs in a commercial setting, it’s more than just an inconvenience — it’s a health and safety concern that needs immediate action. Recently, our team at High Demand Restoration responded to an urgent after-hours call from a supermarket in Kogarah, Sydney NSW where approximately 70 square metres of the premises were affected by contaminated water and grease.

Before Restoration
Understanding the Situation
Grease trap overflows typically happen when the trap becomes full or blocked, causing wastewater mixed with fats, oils, and grease to back up. This type of contamination falls under Category 2 (Grey Water), which carries a moderate health risk if not cleaned up promptly and professionally. Left untreated, it can lead to bacterial growth, strong odours, and long-term damage to flooring and fixtures.
Our Response
Within 40 minutes of receiving the call, our technicians arrived on-site to begin the clean up. The first step was to extract standing water and grease residue using professional wet vacuum systems. Fixtures and movable equipment were temporarily relocated to allow full access to the affected areas, ensuring a thorough and complete clean.
We then performed a detailed hand spray and wipe process to remove grease films and surface contaminants. To eliminate any lingering odours, Neutra Fresh odour neutraliser was applied throughout the area. All contaminated materials — including solids, grease, and waste — were safely collected and disposed of in compliance with environmental standards.
Health and Safety First
Because grease trap water can contain bacteria and organic waste, strict hygiene protocols were followed from start to finish. Our team used full personal protective equipment (PPE) and disposables throughout the job to ensure safe handling and prevent cross-contamination.
The Result
By acting quickly and following industry best practices, the affected supermarket was restored to a clean, safe, and odour-free condition. Importantly they were able to resume trade as normal and avoid tens of thousands of lost sales. Rapid response and proper sanitation prevented potential health hazards and allowed the business to resume operations without extended downtime.
