Kitchen Flood Restoration and Mould Remediation After Dishwasher Leak in Bondi, NSW
A homeowner in North Bondi experienced two separate flood events caused by a leaking hose connected to their dishwasher. The repeated leaks raised concerns about damage to the kitchen cabinetry, possible mould growth, and potential secondary impact to the kitchen bench-top and adjoining living and dining area flooring.
Incident Overview
The customer advised that water had leaked on two occasions, primarily affecting the cabinetry beneath the sink and adjacent to the washing machine. They also noted cracking in the caulking along the kitchen bench-top and were concerned about whether moisture had spread into nearby flooring and wall structures.

Inspection and Findings
On arrival, we observed significant water damage to the lower cabinetry shelving, including a particle board shelf. We identified mould growth on affected sections of the cabinet below the sink which the owners were previously unaware of.

Removed Mould Damaged Shelving
Cracking was also evident in the caulking along the bench top, consistent with repeated moisture exposure from the leaking hose.
Moisture testing was conducted across all suspected areas to assess any ongoing moisture impact. Testing confirmed that the masonry wall behind the washing machine, kitchen kickboards, affected shelving, and living/dining room flooring were all returning readings consistent with dry standard conditions at the time of inspection, indicating no further drying was required.
Remediation Works

After discussing remediation options with the insured, it was agreed that physical removal of the mould-affected shelving was the most appropriate solution. The damaged shelving was carefully removed while operating an Air Filtration Device (AFD) and HEPA vacuum to minimise the risk of dust and cross-contamination. All removed materials were securely bagged and disposed of appropriately.
Upon completion of works, the affected area was HEPA vacuumed, leaving the site clean and tidy prior to departure.
Why This Matters
Repeated small leaks can cause progressive damage that isn’t always obvious at first glance. Cabinetry, particularly particle board shelving, is highly susceptible to moisture and can become a source of mould growth even when surrounding materials test dry. Early inspection and targeted remediation help prevent further deterioration and reduce the risk of ongoing mould issues.
The Result
The mould-affected materials were safely removed, treated, and disposed of, and the kitchen area was stabilised and left clean. With the immediate contamination addressed and moisture levels confirmed as dry, the homeowner now has clarity on the condition of the affected areas and a clear plan should further remediation be required.
